Baby Crib Safety by Baby's Nests

There are a lot of things to consider when you have a baby. You need to prepare your house, have more free time to take care of your baby, and invest a lot of money on baby needs. Some people might prefer to use second hand baby furniture to cut their cost. However, the first thing you should consider is not the price of the things you but rather the safety above all else. Babies will have almost continuous interaction with their baby furniture cribs so you want to make sure they are as safe as they can be.

There is nothing wrong with shopping for second hand items for your baby but when it comes to a crib you should at least consider the benefits of a new crib. You will never know the history of a used crib and it may be contaminated with some disease from the previous owner. This is an unnecessary risk that you would not want to expose your baby to. Spending a little more on a new baby crib is money well spent. However, your new crib needs to pass safety standards as well.

Some parents may not be familiar with all the safety standards for baby cribs. Many requirements have changed in recent years such as the crib rails have to be close enough to each other to prevent the child head from getting stuck but also wide enough for their arms and legs. The government standard is about the same width as a soda can, 2 and 3/8 inches.

Another thing that you should check for is a bumper. The bumper can protect your baby from getting hurt when they unintentionally bump their head on the rails. However, there is the risk that your baby could get tangled in an unsecured bumper which will put them at risk of suffocation.

The next considerations are blankets and pillows. When you buy a crib set, it usually come with a matching color pillow and blanket. You have to be sure that the pillow that comes with crib is not too big or too small which may hurt your baby's neck. Another suggestion is to wash the pillow and blanket before you give it to your baby to ensure optimum cleanliness.

If your crib breaks in any way, stop using it immediately and have it fixed or buy a new one. Do not risk putting your baby in it. With these few precautions, you can be sure that your baby will be safe in their lovely crib.
